Why should bakers choose an iron cake tin?
Unlike aluminium or silicone, spun iron delivers a firm bake with crisp edges and consistent rise. It heats quickly and evenly, helping cakes cook through without overbaking the outer layer. With no chemical coatings, the seasoning can be easily restored at home using flaxseed or cooking oil, making this a tin you’ll turn to again and again.
Its compact depth is perfect for single-layer cakes, tortes, dense chocolate bakes, or pastry-less quiches. This is a straightforward, practical tin that performs reliably and looks good doing it.
The edible Sussex flax oil coating is easy to wash & naturally non-stick. It is ready for immediate use. No chemicals or PTFE are used in the coating of this pan. Coating can be simply restored at home, time after time.
Every product Netherton Foundry makes is part of its family’s story. A blend of heritage, sustainability and craftsmanship that is made to serve your family for years to come.

Caring for Your Netherton Foundry Cake Tin
Using Your Pre-Seasoned Cake Tin for the First Time
Your cake tin is pre-seasoned and ready to use. Simply rinse it in hot water (without soap or detergent), dry it thoroughly, and you’re ready to bake. For even better results, we recommend applying a light coating of flax oil before first use. This strengthens the seasoned surface and enhances performance over time.
Re-Seasoning Your Cake Tin at Home
Re-seasoning helps restore your tin’s naturally non-stick finish and protects it from rust.
To re-season:
- If rust is present, remove it gently with fine sandpaper or steel wool
- Wash the tin in hot, soapy water and scrub with a stiff brush or scouring pad
- Rinse and dry completely with a towel
- Using a clean cotton cloth, apply a very thin layer of flax oil to all surfaces
- Place the tin upside down on an oven rack with a tray beneath to catch any drips
- Slowly heat the oven to 250°C
- Once at temperature, bake for 1 hour, then switch off the oven and allow the tin to cool inside
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated space
You may repeat the seasoning process if needed to build up a stronger protective layer.
Using Your Cake Tin
- Always preheat the oven before baking
- Grease and line as needed depending on your recipe, although the seasoned surface helps release cakes easily
- Avoid rapid temperature changes. Never add cold ingredients into a very hot tin
- Do not use directly on a stovetop, under a grill, or over a flame
Baking with Acidic Ingredients
Highly acidic ingredients such as rhubarb, citrus or vinegar-based batters can affect the seasoned surface.
- To prevent damage, re-season before baking acidic recipes
- If any rust or discolouration develops, follow the re-seasoning instructions
Cleaning Your Cake Tin
- Never place your cake tin in the dishwasher
- Do not soak or leave wet
- Clean using hot water and a stiff brush. Avoid soap or detergent
- For stuck-on residue, gently simmer water in the tin to help lift it
- Dry immediately and thoroughly with a towel
- You may apply a light coating of flax oil before storing to maintain the seasoned surface
Best Oils for Re-Seasoning
Use: Edible flax oil (also known as linseed oil)
Avoid: Olive oil, nut oils, or boiled linseed oil (non-edible)
Storing Your Cake Tin
- Store in a dry, airy location
- Do not cover the tin tightly, as moisture can lead to rust
- If stacking, place a soft cloth or paper towel between items to protect the surface
With regular use and care, your Netherton Foundry cake tin will develop a rich patina and offer years of reliable performance for all your baking needs.
Netherton Foundry is a proudly family-owned business in the heart of South Shropshire, once known as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Where smokestacks once dominated the skyline, today there is a gentler rhythm to life, but the legacy of innovation remains.
Drawing deep inspiration from Shropshire’s iron masters of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially Abraham Darby, the pioneer behind the world’s first iron bridge, Netherton Foundry blends traditional craftsmanship with a modern environmental conscience. Their work reimagines the spirit of that extraordinary era, honouring its ingenuity while being mindful of the environmental lessons it left behind.
Each product is a celebration of heritage, quality, and sustainability, reflecting a time when things were made to last and made with care.
