Why choose a pre-seasoned tray?
The organic Sussex flax oil coating contains no chemicals or PTFE, offers natural non-stick performance and arrives ready for immediate use. The coating can be refreshed at home whenever needed, building a stronger patina over time and improving the tray’s durability.
Why use a black iron baking and roasting tray?
Black iron withstands very high temperatures and works reliably in all heat sources, including ovens, hobs and open fires. It heats evenly, responds quickly to temperature changes, and is a pure, simple, and fully recyclable material that lasts for decades with straightforward care.
What’s special about Netherton Foundry black iron pans and trays?
Experienced cooks favour black iron cookware for its even heat and consistent cooking results. The seasoned surface improves with use, becoming smoother and more resilient. Every piece is made by hand, so each tray carries its own subtle differences. Slow heating protects the metal on all stove types, particularly induction, and prevents unnecessary warping. Simple habits like oiling food instead of the pan, bringing ingredients to room temperature and allowing natural release during cooking all enhance performance and preserve the seasoned surface.
This substantial baking and roasting tray will serve reliably for everyday cooking and special occasions. More guidance can be found in our Netherton Foundry Black Iron Pans blog.

Caring for Your Netherton Foundry Square Roasting & Baking Tray
Using Your Pre-Seasoned Baking Sheet for the First Time
- Your baking sheet arrives pre-seasoned and ready to use.
- Simply rinse it in hot water (without soap or detergent), dry thoroughly, and you can begin baking straight away.
- For best results, we suggest applying a thin coating of edible flax oil before the first use. This helps reinforce the seasoned surface and enhances non-stick performance over time.
Re-Seasoning Your Baking Sheet at Home
Over time, seasoning may wear down, especially with frequent use or when baking sticky or acidic items. Re-seasoning restores the protective layer and keeps your sheet naturally non-stick.
To re-season:
- If any rust has appeared, gently remove it with fine sandpaper or steel wool
- Wash the sheet in very hot, soapy water using a stiff brush or scouring pad
- Rinse and dry completely
- Apply a very thin layer of edible flax oil to all surfaces using a clean cotton cloth
- Place the sheet upside down on an oven rack with a tray or foil beneath to catch any drips
- Slowly heat the oven to 250°C
- Once the temperature is reached, bake for 1 hour
- Turn the oven off and let the baking sheet cool slowly inside
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated space
You can repeat the process as needed to build up and maintain the seasoned layer.
Using Your Baking Sheet
- Preheat your oven before placing the sheet inside
- Avoid sudden temperature changes that can cause warping
- For sticky or sugary bakes, lightly oil the surface or line with parchment paper
- Do not use the baking sheet directly over a flame or on the stovetop
- Always handle with oven gloves, as the sheet will become extremely hot
Baking with Acidic Ingredients
Acidic foods such as citrus, vinegar-based glazes, or tomato sauces may wear down the seasoning.
- Re-season the sheet after baking with acidic ingredients
- If discolouration or rust appears, follow the re-seasoning steps above
Cleaning Your Baking Sheet
- Never place your baking sheet in the dishwasher
- Do not soak or leave the sheet wet
- Wash using hot water and a stiff brush only
- Avoid soap or detergents, which can strip the seasoning
- For stuck-on food, try simmering a little water in the sheet in the oven to loosen residue
- Dry thoroughly and immediately with a clean towel
- Apply a very light coat of flax oil before storing if desired
Best Oils for Re-Seasoning
Use: Edible flax oil (also known as linseed oil)
Avoid: Olive oil, nut oils, and boiled linseed oil (not suitable for cooking)
Storing Your Baking Sheet
- Store in a dry, well-ventilated area
- Do not cover tightly or store in damp conditions, as moisture can cause rust
- If stacking with other cookware, place paper or a soft cloth between items to protect the surface
Each Netherton Foundry baking sheet is individually handcrafted in Shropshire, which means no two are exactly alike. With consistent care, your baking sheet will develop a rich, natural patina and deliver outstanding results for years to come.
Cooking guidance and tips:
- Oil the food, not the pan, and allow ingredients to reach room temperature before cooking.
- Heat slowly to frying temperature before increasing power, especially on induction or powerful hobs.
- Use a hob the same size as the pan base; small rings can warp larger pans.
- Oven seasoning is recommended for a more even finish; hob top seasoning works for smaller pans or woks.
- Wooden or silicone utensils are recommended to protect the seasoned surface.
- Never drop a hot pan into cold water to avoid warping.
Every pan is hand-spun, so slight variations in flatness are natural. Oak handles are individually branded and unique, and each pan develops a richer patina with use.
Netherton Foundry is a proudly family-owned business in the heart of South Shropshire, once known as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Where smokestacks once dominated the skyline, today there is a gentler rhythm to life, but the legacy of innovation remains.
Drawing deep inspiration from Shropshire’s iron masters of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially Abraham Darby, the pioneer behind the world’s first iron bridge, Netherton Foundry blends traditional craftsmanship with a modern environmental conscience. Their work reimagines the spirit of that extraordinary era, honouring its ingenuity while being mindful of the environmental lessons it left behind.
Each product is a celebration of heritage, quality, and sustainability, reflecting a time when things were made to last and made with care.
